Gambia is an up-and-coming African holiday destination with plenty going for it. Sandy beaches, lots of sun and a vibrant local culture are among its big attractions. Gambia’s tourism industry is beach-focussed, with lots of quality hotels. Gambia’s watersports industry is surprisingly undeveloped, given its growing popularity. So, if you want to take a Gambia windsurfing holiday, what are your options?
Gambia has plenty of beaches and warm water, but it also has plenty of waves. It is a great place for experienced windsurfers to sail, but has few places where beginners could safely learn. This has meant that Gambia hasn’t developed a network of windsurf operators and hire shops. But for those who can bring their own gear and can handle some often hefty swell, Gambia is a great place to sail. Beware, though, the strong currents that can be treacherous.
One of Gambia’s most popular beach destinations is Kololi. If you do want to try and hire gear, this is probably the best place to head, as it has the largest concentration of hotels. The beach itself is long and sandy, with fairly consistent wind. For the biggest waves, thead to Senegambia Beach for fast, big waves and almost empty waters. Senegambia and Kololi are challenging places to sail – much of the time, it’s experts only.
Those with less experience could try heading south to Secret Bay, where there is another popular surf spot. It tends to have gentler swell than Kololi, though it is still no place for beginners.
Gambia’s often wild seas and lack of infrastructure tend to put off all but the most determined windsurfers. Those who do make it are well-rewarded with empty waters, challenging waves and consistent winds. Are you up to the challenge of a Gambia windsurfing trip?
