Guide to Marrakech scuba diving holidays

Marrakech is Morocco’s colourful capital. It is a fascinating city where you can get lost in the winding souks, eat steaming bowls of food in its market, watch snake charmers and wake up to the call of the muezzins. It is a vibrant place, but it’s busy, and hot. Why not cool down on a Marrakech scuba diving trip?

Morocco is not an established dive destination, so the chances are, you won’t have to worry about bumping into other dive groups. It is very much an undiscovered, off the beaten track place to dive. The main dive spots are Tangier and Agadir.

Tangier is the further away of the two from Marrakech, on the northern coast, on the straits of Gibraltar. Agadir is south-west of Marrakech, on the Atlantic coast. Both places have dive schools. Elsewhere, even with your own equipment, you might struggle to find anyone who can give you air.

Dive schools often take their clients out to small villages, such as Tazgahoute near Agadir, and launch from there, making scuba a great way to see more of the country than you otherwise would. You’ll see a variety of ocean fish, such as tuna and bream. Dolphins are sometimes seen near Moroccan shores, as are turtles.

If you are willing to travel even further afield, then you could fly over to the Canary Islands. There, you can explore underwater volcanic rocks and see a wider range of fish in their warmer waters.

If the heat and the crowds of the city get too much, take a Marrakech scuba diving trip. And because Morocco’s dive industry is so young, you’ll be a trailblazer.
