Antigua and Barbuda is a Caribbean two-island nation. Antigua is the larger and more built-up island, Barbuda is sparsely populated. Most travellers head to the country for its warm beaches, sheltered coral reefs, palm trees and rum punch. But there is another side to Antigua and Barbuda. Despite not being especially hilly, it can be a great place for getting off-road on a mountain bike.
Antigua and Barbuda’s coast is ringed by beaches – apparently, one for each day of the year. They are both rocky, mainly limestone islands, with rainforests to the interior. Antigua also has some volcanic hills, the highest of which is Mount Obama (also known as Boggy Peak) at 400m.
This area is the most enticing for Antigua and Barbuda mountain biking visitors. Unfortunately, there isn’t much in the way of trails on the hills. The land at the top of Mount Obama is privately owned and inaccessible. However, you can bike the dirt roads that climb up and around the mountain, through its dense jungle.
There is also some enjoyable off-road riding to be had on lower ground. You’ll find some lovely coastal trails with great views out over the Carribbean Sea. Stop in a beach bar for some leisurely refreshment as you go! You could also head over to Barbuda. The island is flatter than Antigua, but the pay-off is that it is free of big holiday resorts. You can get on your bike and explore away from the crowds. Ferries run regularly between the two islands.
An Antigua and Barbuda mountain-biking trip is a chilled-out, fun way to enjoy a biking holiday.
