Guide to Mexico surfing holidays

With two long coastlines on two different oceans, it’s not surprising that surfing is a popular sport in Mexico. The country started attracting American surfers over the border in the 1960s, and a vibrant surf scene grew up from there. Now, locals are in on the action too, along with plenty of international tourists. So, where could you go on a Mexico surfing holiday?

Most of Mexico’s surf spots are on its Pacific coast, where the waves are bigger and hence better. The Baja California, a long peninsula between the Gulf of California and the Pacific, is a popular destination for American surfers, who can just hop over the border and be surfing within hours. There are great spots up and down its coast, so it’s worth exploring. There is a good range of surf to suit everyone, with Todos Santos being the top choice, with perfect waves for intermediates.

Further south, there are some great spots in the state of Oaxaca. Puerto Esconolido is infamous for the ‘Mexican pipeline’. This is often a huge tube that can reach as high as 20 feet. It attracts some of the world’s best surfers who want to test their mettle, but it’s not a place for beginners.

One of the best all-round resorts is Troncones, in the state of Guerrero, just north of Oaxaca. It has consistently good surf for beginners to experts, although the waves can be too high for beginners in the summer months. There several other good reef and point breaks within easy travelling distance.

A Mexico surfing trip offers a huge range of options, with surfing for everyone at beaches up and down the coast.
