Guide to Bilbao scuba diving holidays

Bilbao lies on Spain’s often forgotten northern Coast. On the Bay of Biscay, it is part of the Basque Country, giving it a culture and feel that is distinctive from most of Spain. Bilbao’s stunning Guggenheim Museum is its big tourist draw, and the city is a great place to explore, with lots of attractive squares and winding streets to see. But there is more to see around Bilbao, including underwater.

Take a Bilbao scuba diving trip and see the Bay of Biscay from underneath. Bilbao is not right on the coast, but it is just a short hop to get there and get diving. The Bay of Biscay can be tough to dive, with cooler waters, lower visibility and rougher seas than in southern Spain. But there is lots to see – both wrecks and marine life.

The waters of the Bay of Biscay have some unusual currents, and water that is a little bit warmer than the Atlantic further west. That gives it a different ecosystem to many other dive spots in northern Spain. Expect to see some interesting, leafy fauna and a wide range of fish, which could include eels and rays. There is some good cave diving in the area, which has a rocky sea floor with plenty of underwater caverns and canyons to explore.

A Bilbao scuba diving trip is a great way to get to know this area’s wild side from a different perspective. Bilbao is surrounded by rugged countryside and has a beautiful, windswept coast. But there is much to see underneath the water as well as above it – make sure you do.
