Guide to Vilamoura scuba diving holidays

Vilamoura is an attractive, upmarket resort on Portugal’s Algarve. It is well-known for its golf courses, as well as its marina, casino and glamorous nightlife. And of course, it has some really stunning beaches. But what if you really want to get away from it all? Take a Vilamoura scuba diving trip.

There are several dive schools in the Vilamoura area, and plenty of interesting dive sites. The water around Vilamoura gets up into the low twenties in summer. Portugal probably has some of Western Europe’s best diving, with relatively clear waters and lots of wrecks to see.

The Atlantic coast has proved a treacherous one for many boats over the years, and there are several that can easily be dived from Vilamoura. Just along the coast at Faro, you’ll find some great wrecks. They include a 17th century warship, and an iron fishing boat, sunk deliberately to create an artificial reef. You’ll also find an American World War Two bomber aircraft.

When it comes to marine life, expect to see a pretty wide range. There is some coral, sea sponges and sea anemones, creating colour. You might find eels, squid, cuttlefish and octopus, bream, group and shellfish including crabs and shrimp. Vilamoura and Portugal in general, stands up pretty well against other Atlantic dive spots, including Morocco to the south. If you want to try something different, travel over to the Azores, Portuguese islands out in the Atlantic where you’ll see some stunning underwater volcanic rock formations.

Take a Vilamoura scuba diving trip and get something different out of your Algarve holiday. Anyone can lie on sunlounger…not everyone can explore the Atlantic Ocean.
