Guide to Bulgaria windsurfing holidays

Bulgaria has shot up many people’s list of top beach destinations in the last few years. Once hidden behind the Iron Curtain, Bulgaria is now a country on the up, and it shows. The country’s Black Sea resorts get more popular every year, and many of those who go to them want to windsurf. Bulgaria is a great place to learn to windsurf, with generally calm waters, although there is some wave action to be found too. Winds blow strongest from June to October, with September generally the best. A Bulgaria windsurfing holiday has much to offer.

Most of Bulgaria’s beach resorts will have a windsurfing school or two. Sunny Beach is one of the country’s biggest and best-established resorts. It is ideal for beginners wanting to find their feet. The size of the resort also means there is plenty to do besides windsurfing – good for those who want a multi-activity holiday.

Varna is another large and well-established resort. It is a good choice for windsurfers, with lots of windy days and sometimes waves.

A little way south of Sunny Beach is the town of Pomorie. Lying on a rocky peninsula that juts out into the Black Sea, it has a sandy beach and a sea lake. A little way further south still is Burgas. This attractive bay has reliable wind and, like Pomorie, a calm lake that is great for practising and learning. There are waves too – up to 3m high, depending on the time of day and the time of year.

You can also find waves as Sozopol. The beach is in a very attractive location backed by hills, with the town of Sozopol a few minutes drive away. The winds are consistent and the waves get up to 3m.

Take a Bulgaria windsurfing holiday and explore this beautiful, and often unfairly overlooked, country.
