Cape Verde is a group of ten islands off the western coast of Africa. They are volcanic islands fringed by beautiful white sand beaches, with rocky interiors. Having been colonised by the Portuguese in the fifteenth century, the islands now have a unique blend of Portuguese and African culture, making them a fascinating place to visit. Cape Verde has long been a popular destination with surfers and windsurfers looking for something a little different. Now, Cape Verde paragliding enthusiasts are taking a piece of the action, too.

Cape Verde’s islands are a mixture of flat and arid, mountainous and green. In places, green volcanic slopes find their way right down to coast, where colourful villages are perched right on the water’s edge. They’re certainly rewarding views…

The largest Cape Verde island is Santiago, home to the capital of Praia and some spectacular flying. It’s one of the more mountainous and green islands. There are good take-off sites all around the island, especially near the capital city of Praia.

The island of Brava is another favourite with paragliding pilots. The most popular site is close to the coastal village of Faja de Agua. You’ll climb up the rocky mountain slopes on the coast, and fly up over an abandoned airport. The views over the land and the water are incredible, and well worth the effort of getting there.

Most holidaymakers choose to stay on Sal or Boa Vista, but as these islands are mostly flat, they are not ideal for flying. If you’re staying on one of the main holiday islands, travel to one of the hillier islands to fly.
