Cozumel is a small island lying ten kilometres off the eastern coast of Mexico in the Caribbean Sea. It is a great place to dive and Cozumel scuba diving holidays have become very popular.
Given the incredible natural conditions, the rich history and culture, and well-preserved dive sites (thanks to the Cozumel Reefs National Park), you’ll find everything you need to enjoy an extraordinary diving adventure.
Location, location, location
Lying around 10 kilometres off Mexico’s Caribbean coast, the beautiful clean beaches and turquoise waters of Cozumel create the impression of a tropical paradise. It’s not surprising that the Mayan civilisation colonised the island, with plenty of evidence of their culture still to be found.
Diving conditions
The natural reefs found around the island provide excellent diving conditions for beginners right through to experts. And thanks to the Reefs National Park, founded back in 1996, they have been well preserved.
The marine life is abundant here too, with as many as 250 different varieties of fish making their homes in the water around the island. Some species, such as the queen angelfish and toad fish are found nowhere else on the planet. As well as the fish, there are some of the most spectacular sponge formations you’ll find anywhere.
Most of the dive sites are found south of the island, a short boat ride away. Although there is a limited amount of shore diving to enjoy too.
Weather and best time to travel
As you might expect, the sub-tropical climate you’ll find on Cozumel scuba diving holidays makes things pretty pleasant all year round. Water temperatures vary between a warm 25 and 29 degrees throughout the year.
In the rainy season between July and October, the cloudy skies can take away some of the impact of the sun on the sparkling water. However, this is considered off season, so the waters are less crowded. Usually, even in the rainy season the visibility in the water is excellent.
Thanks to higher winds, waters are a little choppier in the ‘winter’, which falls between November and February, with the peak season coming between March and June.
Whenever you choose to come, there is always plenty to enjoy on Cozumel scuba diving holidays.
