Ghana has become an increasingly popular tourist destination in recent years, with beach resorts developing all down its ‘Gold Coast’. It has taken the diving fraternity a little while to catch on, but diving schools are beginning to appear in Ghana. Being relatively undeveloped, Ghana’s beaches are clean and its water clear. Because Ghana is only just developing as a scuba destination, diving there is still partly about exploration. There is still plenty to discover under Ghanaian waters. It is possible to dive straight off the beach in many places, but the best sites are to be found by heading out on boat dives.

Ghana’s waters are tropical, with temperatures in the late twenties. The best time to dive is during the September to April dry season. In the wet months, the choppier waters tend to get too murky to dive.

There are a few small coral reefs in Ghana’s waters, and plenty of impressive fish. The marine life is similar to that of the Caribbean, across the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. It is a good place to spot shark and rays. You should also see turtles, eels and seahorses. Schooling fish including barracuda and snapper can also be seen.

Visiting Ghana is a really enjoyable experience on land, too. Eating fresh seafood on the beach, getting to know the friendly locals and exploring its colourful villages and towns is all part of the experience. At the end of a hard day’s diving, Ghana’s beaches are great places to kick back and chill out.
