Trekking in Europe is popular and easy excellent facilities for walkers, a vast variety of treks for all abilities and some stunning scenery with plenty of history and culture. Whether you prefer multi-day alpine trekking or circular single day hikes you won’t be disappointed.
Almost every country in Europe takes providing for walkers seriously and maintain tracks and routes in top condition. Of course there’s particular highlights, but it’s worth mentioning that you’ll find great trekking across the Continent even if we don’t mention a specific country in this brief guide.
The Alps are perhaps the best known region for trekking on the continent and for good reason. Including central Europe’s highest peak, Mont Blanc, the Alps provide beautiful green valleys with reflective lakes, snow covered peaks and picture postcard villages.
But Europe trekking is not just about the mountains. On the Adriatic coast of Croatia you’ll find beautiful coves, inlets and islands. The Ashdown Forest in Sussex, UK, provides walks to familiar landmarks from the Winnie the Pooh books and during night treks in Scandinavia you may see the Northern Lights.
Those who seek something a bit more exotic without leaving Europe trekking in the Caucasian states at the far-Eastern edge of Europe is not to be missed. With amazing peaks and some of the earliest remains of human civilisation being found here it is an area full of culture, history and a good walk. Alternatively head North to Iceland where you’ll be able to walk up volcanoes, past geysers and hot springs and admire the otherworldliness of the landscape. Or how about trekking in Dracula country, Transylvania, not only is the region full of dark and imposing castles but also has some great peaks in the Carpathian mountains.
