Lanzarote is a favourite with holidaymakers looking for their annual dose of sunshine. This lovely Canary island offers a great mix of warm weather, good beaches, lively nightlife and Canarian culture. It is also a hotspot for watersports of all kinds, including wakeboarding.
The great Atlantic rollers that crash on to many of the Canary Islands’ beaches don’t make for ideal wakeboarding conditions for most riders. But there are places where you can get out on a wakeboard, in protected bays and lagoons. Lanzarote has very little in the way of inland water, so wakeboarders need to be willing to get out on the sea.
The south of the island is the more sheltered part, and so best for wakeboarding. The most southerly resort is Playa Blanca, a new resort that has quickly become a wakeboarders’ favourite. It is a chilled-out, low-rise resort with its own marina and some great beaches both in the resort and nearby. The town beaches can get busy, but offer superb conditions for wakeboarding, away from the wind and the waves.
Around 2 km along the coast from Playa Blanca you’ll find some of the island’s best beaches and lots of lovely protected bays. Playa Dorada is perfect for wakeboarding, with very calm water and lovely views.
While the south of Lanzarote offers the best wakeboarding conditions on the island, operators in other places are good at finding the right spots. In big resorts such as Playa de las Americas, you should be able to find a place to wakeboard.
