Hungary was once hidden behind the Iron Curtain, but today it is a dynamic, increasingly popular holiday destination. Its capital Budapest is a favourite of culture-lovers and British stag and hen dos. But away from the city, Hungary’s often remote countryside and mountain regions have plenty of appeal. Fancy a Hungary white water rafting trip? No problem!
A few hours’ drive from Budapest is Dunacsuny, a man-made rafting course that is a great place to try the sport out for the first time, or test your skills. It is designed to be accessible to all while stretching the experienced, with good facilities on hand.
If you want to raft on real rivers, you’ll need to travel just outside Hungary. But in Central Europe, where borders are never far away, that’s easy to do. Most rafting operators based in Hungary travel to either Austria or Slovenia to get some action.
In Slovenia, you can raft the Soca River. Running down through the Julian Alps, the river is famously emerald green, and has rapids from class 1 to 5. There are plenty of gentle sections for beginners, but those with the skills to do it love the tough technical sections, especially in spring when meltwater rushes into the valley.
Another popular option is the River Isel in Austria’s Tyrol region. The river bubbles through deep Alpine valleys, forming some challenging rapids from class 2-5. The Isel is the Alps’ last untouched glacial river, and has a wild, remote feel. A rafting trip down the Isel is definitely one to remember.
A Hungary white water rafting trip is a chance to explore some of the best that Central Europe has to offer. Paddle through deep, ancient valleys and feel the call of the Alps…
