Indonesia is the world’s largest island archipelago. Add that fact to a tropical climate and strong winds and what do you get? Windsurfing in paradise. Indonesia today is firmly on the tourist trail, with the island of Bali being the hub.
And Bali is a great place to be for windsurfers, with several good spots around the island. There is, though, much more to Indonesian windsurfing than Bali. Here’s what you need to know to plan your Indonesia windsurfing journey.
On Bali, Sanur beach is where it’s at for many. More chilled out and sophisticated than the party town of Kuta, Sanur attracts a mixed crowd of watersports fans and beach-lovers. Several of Sanur’s beach clubs and hotels offer equipment hire and lessons. You’ll find a good choice of spots, with flat water just off the beach away from the main strip and some great wave spots too, although you’ll have to compete with the surfers!
But, while many windsurfers prefer Sanur to Kuta, there is plenty going on at Kuta for windsurfers. The beach is known for its waves, and those with the experience to handle them will love its rolling breakers. Beginners and flat-water sailors can stick to the the lagoons.
If you’re after something quieter, Kendi Beach might fit the bill. Just a little way north of Kuta, it is a great place of intermediates and experts to get out on the water and enjoy the waves. There is a lagoon for beginners too, but it can get busy
Elsewhere in Indonesia, you’ll find some great windsurfing beaches, but they tend to be off the beaten track. Most watersports fans stick to Bali for easy access to hire gear and advice.
