Guide to Sotavento windsurfing holidays

Sotavento is a fantastic windsurfing destination on the island of Fuerteventura. Like the rest of the Canary Islands, it benefits from strong Atlantic Ocean winds and warm waters all year round. There are great windsurfing beaches all around Fuerteventura’s coast, but Sotavento’s is one of the best. Take a Sotavento windsurfing trip and you’re pretty much guaranteed a good time.

Sotavento lies to the south of the island. It has a long, wide beach backed by dunes. It’s a long way from the sterotypical crowded Canarian holiday beach. Sotavento is a chilled-out resort whose visitors are there to enjoy the sea and the sand, rather than the nightlife.

Sotavento’s best conditions are to be had from April to August, when the winds are at their strongest. The north-east wind in Sotavento is funnelled in through mountains, making it very fast: it’s the perfect place for speed freaks and freestylers. The resort hosts international competitions every year, and attracts expert windsurfers from around the world.

Sotavento is not known for its waves, but wave sailors will find some small waves up to about 2m out in the bay. Those looking for bigger waves can head north to Corralejo and the beaches around it.

But Sotavento is not just a destination for the experts. There is a lovely, shallow lagoon in front of the beach, making it the perfect place for beginners to get started too. There are several well-equipped windsurfing centres on the beach giving lessons and hiring out equipment.

Go on a Sotavento windsurfing holiday and enjoy some of the best conditions and most enjoyable windsurfing anywhere in the world. Once you’re there, you’ll quickly see why the resort is one of the windsurfing world’s favourites.
