Guide to Nepal kayaking holidays

Nepal Kayaking holidays have grown in popularity in the last few years. With many of Nepal’s great rivers under threat of being dammed, it’s time to come and paddle in Nepal and experience the spectacular Himalayan views.

If you are new to the world of whitewater kayaking then Nepal offers a great environment to learn, boasting warm waters and a warm environment. Four day ‘Kayak Clinics’ on the Trisuli or Lower Seti rivers are very popular amongst paddlers wishing to learn the basics of whitewater kayaking. In four days you can learn everything you need to know and get a great induction to the world of whitewater.

For those with a little more experience, the Sun Kosi and Karnali multi day expeditions give you a great opportunity to get away from the city and paddle some big volume water. Going on a commercial trip can be great fun as it gives you the opportunity of paddling these 8-10 day kayak trips with empty boats and to have someone cook for you along the way!

Alternatively the Tamur is a great 11 day trip for experienced paddlers and combines a world class trek and a classic river journey through the far East of Nepal. It is an area that few get to visit giving you a taste of real rural Nepal. But you will need to be a confident Grade IV kayaker for this one, 120 rapids in 131km is no joke!

If river hopping is more your thing, then a Nepal kayaking holiday is perfect for you! Why not head to the Trisuli, onto the Upper Seti, Modi, Madi, Marsyandi, Bhote Kosi and then the Belephi. All this would be possible in two weeks – what other country can offer you that many great rivers in such close proximity to each other! The majority of the rivers are big volume, but some of them (like the Belephi) are more creeky and like little boulder gardens. This trip would give you a great trip around Nepal, and take you to areas most tourists don’t travel to.

For expert kayakers, non-commercial expeditions such as the Dudh Kosi (the river running from Everest), the Thule Bheri or the Humla offer a once in a lifetime experience. These do not come cheap though as you will need to charter flights to get there as they are in very remote areas of the country.

If whitewater is not your thing, then head to Phewa Lake in Pokhara. Here you can hire a kayak out and go for a gentle paddle around the lake with views of the Annapurna mountains making this a stunning day out.
