Guide to Singapore rafting holidays

Singapore is a hot, busy endlessly fascinating island city/country just off the southern tip of Malaysia. While it has plenty to recommend it to travellers looking for excitement, it is very urban and very flat. So where does that leave those who want to take a Singapore white water rafting trip? It’s easier than you’d think…

Just over the Johor-Singapore causeway lies Malaysia, a country with plenty of highlands and plenty of white water rivers. From Singapore, it is easy to arrange a white water rafting trip over the border. Once in Malaysia, you’ll need to head north, past the capital city of Kuala Lumpur and into the Cameron Highlands.

Sungai Selnegor is one of the most easily accessible rafting destinations, lying just north of Kuala Lumpur. The Selangor River offers good, varied rafting for beginners to experts. Overnight and multi-day trips are easy to arrange. You’ll find rapids between Class 2 and 4, running through attractive forested hills.

The Kampar River is another popular rafting destination, although it is not quite as challenging, with rapids up to Class 3. Experts seeking a serious challenge should head to the Telom River. Accessible only by 4×4 through the jungle, this tough river has some Class 5 rapids running through rugged, remote country.

If you want to take a Singapore white water rafting trip, you’ll need to be willing to leave the city and get out into the Malaysian mountains. It’s a great way to get out of the humidity and into cooler climes, and to see a little of the natural world around the buzzing urban centre of Singapore. It’s also great fun!
