If you want to have a snowkiting adventure, travel to South America. Snowkiting is well established in North America, but is a new sport further south. And that’s exciting. Go snowkiting in South America, and you could be doing it in places no-one has done it before. Where will you go on your South America snowkiting trip?
South America boasts a hugely varied terrain and climate. The Andes stretch north to south along the continent’s western coast, and provide a wealth of opportunities for snowkiters. The mountains stretch up to an impressive height of almost 7000 metres, with snow lying on the peaks all year round. Snowkiters, along with skiers and snowboarders, tend to head towards the southern part of the range in Chile and Argentina. There, kiters will find good facilities in the resorts and some very varied snowkiting.
In Argentina, Caviahue is developing as a centre for snowkiting and is home to the Snowkite Jam, an annual snowkiting festival. It attracts experts from across Argentina, but beginners and intermediates are beginning to head to the resort to learn to snowkite. There is some incredible snowkiting near the resort, including wild runs down from the Copahue volcano. Ushuaia, on Argentina’s southern tip, is another popular destination. This harbourside city is backed by mountains and snowfields, and has snow most of the year.
In Chile, the skis resort of Corralco is the place to be. It is a new resort, surrounded by forests and lakes that make great snowkiting terrain. It is also near the Lonquimay volcano – kite to the top and ski down! The Valle Nevado is another popular option. It’s Chile’s largest ski resort, with good kiting across its valleys.
You can take a South America snowkiting trip just about anywhere in the Andes. From volcanoes to peaceful lakes, this continent has it all.
