Guide to Vietnam trekking holidays

Forty years ago it would have been unthinkable to go on a Vietnam trekking holiday. But thanks to the remarkable resilience of its people, Vietnam has been able to rebuild and is now one of the most in-demand holiday destinations on the planet.

The remarkable beauty of the country is an obvious draw. In the north the yellow terraces at harvest time are unforgettable, as are the stunning central highlands with tree-covered peaks. The southern bustling Mekong delta is yet another unmissable aspect of this vibrant, friendly and completely unique destination.

Any Vietnam trekking adventure should start with a stay in the capital Hanoi. Book a hotel in Hanoi and familiarise yourself with the different way of life you’re going to experience in Vietnam. As you might expect, the food is simply stunning and the city’s infamous nightlife is something to enjoy before setting out on a different kind of adventure.

Sapa is considered one of Vietnam’s best trekking spots, with Mt. Fansipan of Lao Cai being the highest peak in the entire Indochina region, standing at an impressive 3,143 metres.

Another area that is great for Vietnam trekking holidays is Pu Luong, a nature reserve of outstanding natural beauty. Two parallel mountain ridges line a valley of immense beauty, complete with precariously perched terraces and breathtaking views.

One of the best things about trekking in Vietnam is the cost. Accommodation, which you’ll find in the form of guesthouses, is cheap almost everywhere across the country. You should be able to sample some local street food and spend the night for only a few pounds.

The locals are almost universally friendly and welcoming, and are unsurprisingly very proud of their very beautiful homeland. Of course, the country has a very rich history to explore, not the least the terrible war of the last century. All in all this is truly unique trekking destination.
