As an active person I have owned many versatile shorts with pants built in. To be honest I normally end up cutting the pants out as I don’t find them comfortable. Read this Helly Hansen Pace 2-in-1 shorts review so find out if they escaped my scissors.
I tend to go trail running at least once a week, which would be the main use of the HH Pace shorts. They are made for runners who want a performance short with a longer length. At 9 inches these come down to my knees but then I am relatively short.
Helly Hansen Pace 2-in-1 shorts review: First impressions
On taking them out of the packaging I was disappointed to find that the built in tights are actually pants. Having never got on with shorts with pants built in I expected to not get along with them.
However pulling them on for the first time I realised that these built in pants were different. They are soft with minimal seams, elasticated enough to not be restrictive but supportive enough to avoid junk jiggling as you jog.

Pace 2-in-1 shorts review: Running
I couldn’t conduct this Helly Hansen Pace 2-in-1 shorts review without going for a run, so I got kitted up and hit the trail. Instantly I was pleased with the comfort of the pants, they just felt right and in fact more comfortable that my normal sport pants.
The outer shorts are nice and baggy and come down to just above my knees. Personally I am not a fan of short shorts or tight shorts so at 9 inches long these were perfect for me. I soon realised that the lightweight stretch fabric makes them very versatile shorts with pants built in.
Once I had a few miles under my belt and had started to heat up I found that the X-Cool quick dry fabric combined with the mesh side panels to keep air flowing and sweat minimal. The breathability of the material kept me dry and at a ideal temperature running in the summer.
It is now autumn and I am still running in the Helly Hansen Pace 2-in-1 shorts including in strong wind on Monday. At no point have I felt cold or as if the breathability and mesh is letting too much air through.
I am a big fan of pockets and the Helly Hansen Pace 2-in-1 shorts come with two side pockets and small valuables pocket below the waistband at the back. The side pockets are deep enough for stuff not to jump out, however I would have preferred at least one of them to include a zip.
For safety there are discrete reflective details to help you be seen. The waistband is elastic with a traditional adjustable cord. Overall they are exceptionally comfy and we’ll suited to running.
Versatile shorts with pants
Some shorts can’t really be worn for more than the intended activity. If you wear board shorts on a mounting bike or mountain biking shorts down the gym you are going to be uncomfortable.
In conducting this Helly Hansen Pace 2-in-1 shorts review I have found them to be highly versatile. I have worn them to the gym, hiking, the beach and even played football in them with no problems. I would also be happy to cycle short distances in them, go climbing or go to the pub in them on a hot day.
In short the HH Pace 2-in-1 shorts are comfy and highly versatile shorts with pants that are built in. The only problem I can forsee is I can’t wear them everyday, as with built in pants they need washing after every activity. But at least they are quick drying.
