Amorgos is one of Greece’s lesser-known, but most beautiful islands. Without an airport, visitors arrive by boat from Athens or other nearby islands, in search of sun, sea and seclusion. Being relatively late to the tourism party, Amorgos is still unspoilt, with its Greek cultural heart still intact and mostly small-scale, local-run accommodation. The island also has some stunning beaches, many of which are often all-but empty. And when the wind blows, as it often does, it’s time to get out on the water, on an Amorgos windsurfing holiday.
Amorgos lies in the Aegean Sea, between mainland Greece and Turkey, and catches the strong summer Meltemi winds that help make the area one of Europe’s favourite windsurfing destinations. The island’s beaches are mostly sheltered from the stronger winds, meaning visitors need to look elsewhere for their windsurfing fix. That’s no problem: neighbouring Naxos has fantastic conditions.
Like Amorgos, Naxos is a still-traditional Greek island. Without an airport, its tourists are there to soak up Greek culture, enjoy the weather and to get out on the water. The island gets the full force of the Meltemi winds in July and August, and has good spots for beginners and experts alike.
Most windsurfing happens on the beaches in and around Naxos Town, and there are several good windsurf schools around. The area around the Flisvos sports centre is renowned for its wave sailing, with waves up to 2m high. It is known to some as the best wave spot in Greece! There is also a nice shallow lagoon for beginners to find their feet, and some great fast flatwater spots too.
Take an Amorgos windsurfing holiday and you’ll find yourself in one of the most beautiful parts of Greece, with some of its strongest winds ready to catch in your sails.
