Monaco is best known for its glamorous nightlife, casinos and Grand Prix. It has been a favourite of European, and world, jet-setters for generations. With its stunning cliff-side location and views out over the glittering Mediterranean, it’s not difficult to see what has attracted so many to this tiny principality. Monaco has several dive clubs and schools which take divers out on trips across the Cote d’Azur. The best diving tends to be deep, away from the busy beaches and the fishing boats. There is a wide variety of marine life to be seen, including coral, sunfish, octopus, barracuda, eels and lobster.
Cap Ferrat is a favourite local diving spot, only around 10 minutes by boat from Monaco. It is a small, rocky peninsula on Villefranche Bay. Protected from the wind and waves of the open sea, it is a great place to learn to dive, with lots to see. Some of the deeper dive sites away from the shore offer good deep diving, with steep walls and drop-offs.
If you’re into wrecks, you’ll have a few to choose from, though most are fairly small. They include the Robuste II, a steam tug boat sunk just off the coast in World War Two.
