Guide to Morzine snowkiting holidays

Morzine is one of France’s most popular ski resorts. With its attractive wooded slopes, relaxed vibe and pretty wooden chalets, it is a firm favourite with many skiers and snowboarders. But Morzine’s visitors are not just skiers and boarders…more and more of them are snowkiters, drawn by the several good spots close to the resort. If you’d like to try a Morzine snowkiting adventure, here’s what you need to know.

Morzine is part of the Portes du Soleil ski area, which links it by lift to several other local resorts on the French-Swiss border. Avoriaz is the largest and best-known, though there are several others. That opens up more snowkiting areas to those based in Morzine.

The village of Les Crosets has a small but good snowkiting spot. It lies on the Swiss side of the Portes du Soleil lift system. While there is no snowkiting school or hire shop there, anyone with their own gear can head up and get their kite up. If you need snowkiting lessons, head to Champery, where there is a snowkiting school.

Away from the Portes du Soleil, you can find good snowkiting at other easy-reachable resorts. In Italy’s Aosta Valley, a little to the south of Morzine, head for La Thuile. There is a large and well-established snowkiting area on the Saint Bernard Pass, on the border between France and Italy. Into Switzerland, the Simplon Pass above the town of Brig is the place to head. With plenty of space to fly and instruction and hire on hand, it’s one of the Alps’ top spots.
