If you are basing yourself in Wanaka your two closest ski resorts are Cardrona and Treble Cone. You can still head over the hill to the Queenstown resorts of Coronet Peak and The Remarkables. One of the great things about being based in Wanaka is that Ohau ski field is also accessible for a day trip.
Treble cone is just 45 minutes from Wanaka and has not only fantastic skiing, but views to match. With mainly intermediate and advanced terrain, Treble Cone is an intermediate and advanced skiers paradise. With gullies, chutes, rocks and steeps there is something to be found for even the most adventurous.
Cardrona is a close 35-minute drive and offers incredible beginner and intermediate terrain. With long wide-open groomer trails it is the place to be to find your legs on your first day. If you are after something a little steeper try arcade chutes.
There is some great off-piste riding between each of the three bowls that creates Cardrona ski resort. If rails and jumps are what you after, Cardrona has that too with arguably New Zealand’s best terrain park, hosting events like the Freeski NZ Open in both park and pipe.
Ohau ski field is a just over 2 hours away and it a little beauty tucked away in the Southern Alps. Once you are there you will see it is well worth the drive. Generally having small crowds, this local ski resort can easily make for the best day of the holiday.
