Bordeaux has something of a reputation as a surfers’ paradise, so it’s no surprise that it is a great place for wave sailors too. But beginners and those who prefer flatter water will also be able to find their place. Lacanau offers big waves on its ocean beaches, and calm water on its lakes and sandy coves. Autumn and spring tend to be the best times for wind. Summer winds tend to be gentle – though beginners will love the easy sailing on the lakes, which lie just inshore. Just to the north of Lacanau is Hourtin Plage, another great destination with both a beach and a lake to ride. It’s very popular with kitesurfers, but is a good windsurfing destination too.

Further south, there are several other great beaches, with Atlantic waves crashing down on their sand. Biscarosse, like Lacanau and Hourtin, has big waves on the beach and calmer waters on the lakes which lie just a short distance inland. The wind is generally good on the beach, reaching up to 20 knots in the summer months. Waves can get up to 5m high, especially at high tide, so the inexperienced will need to stick to the lakes!

Take a Bordeaux windsurfing trip and you’ll have a world of wind, waves, lakes and sand dunes to explore. Enjoy the sun, the water and the rich local culture.
