Guide to Koh Tao windsurfing holidays

The Thai island of Koh Tao is best known as a centre for scuba diving. But the island has thriving windsurfing scene that is often overlooked by travellers looking to dive and party on Koh Tao and its better known neighbours, Koh Phangan and Koh Samui. Koh Tao has a very different vibe to either of those islands – with a focus on chilling out, enjoying the view and getting out on the water.

Mae Haad is the island’s main beach and the centre of its windsurf industry. The beach lies on the island’s west coast, which is perfectly placed for windsurfing. Winds tend to be gentle and the water fairly flat, so it’s a great place to learn to windsurf. Those who like waves can find swells up to 3m when the conditions are right.

Beginners can enjoy easy windsurfing off the beach at Mae Haad, and the more experienced can take a windsurf safari around the island. Koh Tao is just 21 km long, so it’s relatively easy to navigate around. Along the way, you’ll find perfect deserted beaches, swaying palms and, beneath your board, teeming colourful fish…

If you’re looking for something more challenging, consider hopping over to the mainland and Phuket. You’ll find good winds and mostly flat water from November to May, with the strongest winds from November to February. If you’re after waves, things can get choppy from June to October.

Koh Tao and the islands and beaches near it are some of Thailand’s best-loved. Take a Koh Tao windsurfing holiday and you’ll get to ride clear, gorgeous blue waters and enjoy some of Thailand’s famously friendly culture.
