Kitesurfing in Spain is not just located in the old Fort town of Tarifa and is also not just located on the mainland. Do not forget the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa. The best time to travel to the mainland or the Canaries for your Spain Kitesurfing holiday is during the summer months. This is when you will get the wind building up throughout the day up to 30+ mph. The island of Lanzarote has a highest percentage of windy days due its location in the Atlantic.
The spots on mainland Spain such as Gulf de Roses and Tarifa, have temperatures ranging from 12 – 25 degrees. You will probably need a full suit to a shorty all year round. The Canaries are a little warmer as they are closer to the equator and therefore shorty wetsuits and board shorts are a little more viable.
The main locations have good sections of flat water for beginners and freestyle experts. If you want waves then head to Tarifa, Fuerteventura or Lanzarote. If more flat water is the order of the day then head towards the Gulf de Roses.
Flying to any of these spots is relatively cheap with flights from most of the major UK airports serving them. You can always look at hiring a car to explore, this is probably more advisable on the Canary Islands as there are multiple spots per island and this can save you some time and money on public transport or taxis. For mainland Spanish spots you would probably stay closer to the resort so car hire is not essential. The Spanish tourist industry is very well developed meaning you will never be too far away from good activities and excursions making a Spain kitesurfing holiday suitable as a family trip.
Tarifa has some great hotels along with some cheaper rustic accommodation run by local surfers. On Fuerteventura and Lanzarote you can book accommodation near enough on the beach at the kite school location. Take a look at the Melia Gorriones hotel behind the Rene Egli centre overlooking the perfect lagoon.
