Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is basically walking on snow using specially designed snowshoes. It is an ancient way to get around that in the last few decades has gained popularity for recreation. With that in mind use this worldwide snowshoeing travel guide to help you decide where to snowshoe next.

Snowshoes work by distributing the weight of the person over a larger area. This creates “flotation” so the snowshoers foot doesn’t sink into the snow. Traditional snowshoes have a hardwood frame with rawhide lacings and look a little like tennis rackets.

Modern snowshoes use the same principle but look very different. Most are made from a combination of light metal and strong plastic. They come with teeth for grip and heel raisers to offer assistance when going uphill.

Nowadays snowshoes are mainly used for recreational purposes, primarily by winter hikers, or skiers/snowboarders who wish to head up mountains where there are no lifts. But in places with deep snow they are still used by locals to help them get around.

If you want to know where to snowshoe a good place to start is ski resorts, most offer guided snowshoe hikes. But there are a lot more snowy landscapes to explore on foot. So use this worldwide snowshoeing travel guide to find yourself a winter adventure.
